Design & Development Intern

Sonder is seeking a unique and talented intern to join our tiny but mighty team. This position combines various aspects from design and development roles.

As the successful candidate, you will take part in supporting our existing client base through project involvement and occasional small-project management. Your involvement will be primarily focused on brand asset creation (brochures, presentations, packaging, advertisements), UI/UX design for existing sites (page creation, content layout, new feature design, and some light development (mostly HTML & CSS). We’re big fans of providing lots of opportunities for you to learn and grow, as well as for you to show us what you’ve got by diving into projects. This isn’t a “grab our coffee order” type of internship (we’re all remote anyway). This is a “you are a valued member of our team and your work, growth, and professional development are important here” type of internship.

The selected candidate should have post-secondary level education from an accredited design program (either in their final year or recently graduated), a strong design aesthetic, and a fundamental understanding of HTML & CSS. They must also display a strong affinity towards web and development.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients or the Director to determine the scope of a project
  • Advise clients on strategies to reach a particular audience
  • Determine the message varying designs should convey
  • Create images that properly identify a product or convey a message
  • Develop graphics and website layouts
  • Present designs to clients or the Creative Director/Stakeholders
  • Incorporate changes requested by clients into existing assets (both print and web)
  • Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them
  • Pursue new methods and processes that will aid in your skill as a designer/developer
  • Assist with internal projects to further build the Sonder brand
  • Collaborate with copywriters and developers, as required

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills
  • Understanding of standard design software & office tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Google Docs / Microsoft Word, general email & communication software like Slack and Zoom)
  • Ability to learn new applications such as Figma, Sketch
  • Post-secondary level experience designing user interfaces and responsive websites
  • Interest in how websites are built – markup and CSS may be necessary to make edits to existing sites
  • Knowledge of WordPress as a design/communications tool
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn new methods and tools
  • Strong team player with a desire to help whenever possible
  • Eagerness to take on projects and learn how to further enhance your craft 
  • Strong drive and initiative
  • Ability to work and learn remotely (We work 100% remotely, so we’ll need you to do the same!) 
  • Ability to handle constructive criticism and feedback
  • Creative mindset with a desire to push outside their comfort zone and pitch new ideas

Bonus Points (amazing but not essential)

  • Previous experience in a design and/or development role
  • Some experience with SEO would be an asset

Intermediate developer

WordPress experience essential – Design background is a plus.

We are seeking an Intermediate Developer with solid WordPress experience and a sense of design. This position requires a combination of programming skills (namely PHP, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript) and aesthetics (understanding element arrangements on the screen, colour and font choices, and so on). The candidate should have a strong understanding of working within a CMS and developing with modern frameworks. Experience with responsive and adaptive design is essential. Familiarity with the entire web development process –including design, development, and deployment– is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Building responsive and dynamic websites for clients
  • Working with designers to implement visual interfaces
  • Designing and implementing new features and functionality
  • Establishing and guiding the website’s architecture
  • Ensuring high-performance and availability, and managing all technical aspects of the CMS
  • Helping formulate an effective, responsive design and turning it into a working theme
  • Possibility for some design, if experience allows
  • Execution of ‘launch-able’ websites. This may require some content entry and configuration to ensure a completed product

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent understanding of front-end technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
  • Strong understanding of PHP back-end development
  • Experience building user interfaces for websites and/or web applications
  • Experience designing and developing responsive websites
  • Comfortable working with debugging tools like Firebug, Chrome inspector, etc.
  • Ability to understand CSS changes and their ramifications to ensure consistent style across platforms and browsers
  • Ability to convert comprehensive layout and wireframes into working HTML pages
  • Knowledge of how to interact with RESTful APIs and formats (JSON, XML)

Jr Designer

We are seeking a full-time Jr Designer that is excited about designing for print and digital mediums. We are looking for someone with graduate-to-introductory-level experience in the design field. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator that can work to meet the needs of our clients while innovating and adding their own creative flair to each project. Efficiency and organization without compromising work quality are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Build an expand on the Sonder online visual identity

Intermediate / Senior
Web Application Developer

Job Description

We are seeking a full stack Intermediate – Senior Web Application Developer to develop and support medium – large scale web applications. Specifically a new finance and investment product platform. This position requires a combination of development and platform architecture. This will require you to analyze the requirements of the project and be able to scope appropriately.

Prerequisites for this position:

  • Modern Javascript frameworks (React/Redux, Angular, Vue or similar)
  • Experience with database integration (Mysql, Postgres, or similar)
  • Understanding of physical infrastructure (Servers, load balancing)
  • Back-end technologies (NodeJS, Laraval, C#)
  • Capability to build an API driven platform
  • Knowledge of Test Driven Development
  • Good development practices utilizing Git or other version control technology
  • General software documentation
  • Familiarity with CMS integration
  • Experience with responsive and adaptive design is essential.
  • Experience with entire web development process, including design, development, and deployment
  • Must be able to work as a part of a team
